Defence on top

BRAD Friedel was delighted to pick up a creditable point at Stamford Bridge yesterday in a game where it was the defender's turn to take centre stage.

In recent weeks it has been Rovers' entertaining attacking play that has made the headlines, but on this occasion against Chelsea it was the Lancashire side's defensive qualities that came to the fore.

The well earned goalless draw against Jose Mourinho's side meant that Rovers were able to stretch their unbeaten run to fifteen games, including eleven unbeaten in the Barclays Premier League.

"It was a big result because I don't think we played particularly well," said the Rovers number one after the game.

"I thought Chelsea came out and imposed themselves on us in the first half. I thought in the second half we did a lot better, they didn't start getting chances until the last ten minutes or so.

"But in the first half I thought Chelsea were on top so it was credit to the defence really. In the recent weeks our attacking football has been superb, but this time it was the defence that got us the point.

"That is the great thing about our squad, we have a very good squad and everyone can win matches or draw matches and get points for the team on their own merit and that is a good thing to see."

Brad Friedel may have walked away with the post-match champagne after being awarded the man-of-the-match on television, but the giant American felt that the award could have gone to any of the back five yesterday.

"Our form defensively is excellent, in my opinion any one of us could be man-of-the-match at the back, Ryan Nelsen, Chrissy Samba, Brett, Warny and myself, you can't pick out one person, I thought everyone at the back was outstanding."
