I'm 100% Rovers

August 27, 2008 09:45 by lmartinez

ROQUE Santa Cruz has spoken of his delight at signing a new deal with Blackburn Rovers.

Friday saw the Paraguay international commit his future to Rovers in signing a new four-year-deal to keep him at Ewood Park until the summer of 2012.

But after a summer where the 27-year-old was constantly linked with moves away, Roque revealed that one of the reasons he signed a new deal with the club was to put an end to the speculation about his future, and he is now hoping that everything can now settle down.

"I am very happy because we got an agreement with the people from the club," said Roque exclusively to Radio Rovers on Saturday.

"I was also trying to push it so we could get the deal done because people were talking too much about situations which weren't really there.

"So I think that starting this week we can have an easy week now in training, and just enjoy concentrate on each game.

"I also think that the people at the club can now relax, they are making jokes already."

Santa Cruz is hopeful that his new deal with Rovers will have a positive effect on everyone involved with the club.

"It is going to be very positive to the mentality of the team and that is why it is important," added Roque.

"I think it is great news for the fans, but also for the players, the gaffer and for me. It wasn't a good thing to get phone calls every day asking me what is happening.

"So for me it is very important that it is all done and now I can just focus now on Blackburn and football, I'm 100% a Blackburn player and I will keep working hard.

"I'm very happy with the reaction from the fans, they keep pushing me to get better and better, beside the result against Hull it has been a wonderful week."

Window Watch: Andrei Arshavin, Roque Santa Cruz, Philippe Senderos, Nikola Zigic

August 24, 2008 21:22 by lmartinez

Andrei Arshavin, the Russia playmaker, could finally be on his way to Tottenham Hotspur after Zenit St Petersburg agreed to lower their £20 million asking price. Arshavin, who is keen to move to London, has been left out of the Zenit squad for the match against Krylya Sovetov Samara this weekend.

Zenit need the money to buy players before the transfer window closes on September 1, but are worried that Tottenham have lost interest in the 27-year-old. However, Dick Advocaat, the Zenit coach, seems confident that a deal will go through.

“The transfer period is yet to finish and things can still change,” Advocaat said. “Last year we sold Martin Skrtel to Liverpool for £10 million, and now probably Arshavin will go to Spurs.”

Roque Santa Cruz, the Paraguay striker, has ended speculation about his future by signing a new four-year contract with Blackburn Rovers. The 27-year-old has been the subject of failed bids from Aston Villa and Manchester City this summer. The new deal will tie him to Blackburn until June 2012 and his wages will rise to around £60,000 a week.

Santa Cruz has been a huge hit since arriving at Ewood Park from Bayern Munich for £3.8 million last summer and scored 23 goals in all competitions. The forward is thought to have been keen to repay the faith Blackburn showed by signing him from Bayern, despite his poor injury record, while the arrival of his 18-year-old brother, Julio, at the club was another reason to stay.

West Bromwich Albion have signed Borja Valero, the Spanish midfield player, from Real Mallorca for a club-record fee of £4.7 million.

Shaun Maloney has returned to Celtic from Aston Villa in a deal that could rise to £2.5 million. The midfield player moved in the opposite direction 18 months ago for £1 million.

Decent bets

Everton are in pole position to sign Nikola Zigic, the Serbia forward, from Valencia. Zigic was available only on a permanent transfer but his club are now willing to let him go out on loan.

Daniel Arismendi, the Union Atletico Maracaibo and Venezuela striker, has arrived in England for talks with Wigan Athletic.

Long shots

Philippe Senderos’s father has claimed that Newcastle United and AC Milan are trying to sign the Arsenal defender. “If his dad is right, he’s got two tremendous clubs to choose from,” Kevin Keegan, the Newcastle manager, said. “We need another defender.”

Arsenal are not interested in signing Gareth Barry, according to Martin O’Neill, the Villa manager.

One of Thiago Neves’s representatives has said that Manchester City are to sign the Brazil midfield player from Fluminense. Neves is said to have caught the eye while playing for his country in the Olympic Games.

Ramos wants quick resolution of Berbatov's move to United, to raise the funds to bring in Forlan or Santa Cruz

August 21, 2008 01:23 by lmartinez

Spurs boss Juande Ramos wants the Dimitar Berbatov saga to be concluded as soon as possible - and he has his eye on Diego Forlan and Roque Santa Cruz as possible replacements.

Ramos has decided Berbatov's imminent exit will clear the air at White Hart Lane and allow him to bring in the strikers he needs, according to the Daily Mirror.

The Spaniard has been following Forlan for the past month and is prepared to offer Atletico Madrid £14million for the Uruguayan.

Forlan has claimed he is happy in Spain but Atletico are thought to be willing to accept £17million for the striker, suggesting Ramos may get his man.

And the Tottenham chief is also looking seriously at Paraguayan striker Santa Cruz despite Blackburn insisting he will not be leaving Ewood Park.

Santa Cruz scored 23 goals in his first season in English football and with Darren Bent's impressive pre-season form disappearing under the scrutiny of England assistant manager Franco Baldini at Middlesbrough on Saturday Ramos is increasingly determined to land his man.

The money will come from the sale of Berbatov, with White Hart Lane chairman Daniel Levy remaining determined to hold out for at least £30m before he will let the Bulgarian move to United.

Happy Birthday! - Everton 2-3 Blackburn

August 17, 2008 13:32 by lmartinez

ANDRE Ooijer was the unlikely hero as he grabbed a dramatic last minute winner to give Rovers an opening day victory.

The Dutch international lashed home a rebound after Ryan Nelsen had headed against the post, to give Paul Ince his first win as Blackburn Rovers boss.

Rovers started impressively with David Dunn's fine 22nd minute strike, but Arteta curled in a free-kick right on the stroke of half-time to give the hosts an undeserved leveller.

Yakubu put the home side in front just past the hour mark but two minutes later a sublime piece of skill from Roque Santa Cruz drew Rovers level.

Both sides would probably have settled for a point, that was until Andre Ooijer head other ideas and gave Rovers all three.

There may have been changes a-plenty over the summer but Paul Ince named a very familiar starting eleven for the first game of the 2008/09 Barclays Premier League. The only new face on the pitch for Rovers at kick-off being the £3.5m summer signing from Tottenham Paul Robinson. The bench included other new signings Danny Simpson and Carlos Villanueva.

Brett Emerton had failed to be fit in time for the season opener, his place on the right taken by Steven Reid with Aaron Mokoena getting the nod to partner David Dunn in the centre of midfield.

It was the home side who had the first effort at goal, midfielder Jack Rodwell with a low drive that was comfortable for Robinson, but less than sixty seconds later Rodwell turned villain when his wayward pass was intercepted by Morten Gamst Pedersen. The Norwegian drove at goal but Tim Howard tipped his shot around the post.

That early chance for Rovers set the tone for the rest of the half as Paul Ince's side dominated proceedings. On seven minutes last season's top scorer Roque Santa Cruz went close to opening his account for the new campaign, but he headed Reid's centre a foot side of the post.

Five minutes later and Reid and Roque combined once again, a curling cross from the right was met powerfully by the Paraguayan, the ball flashing just over the crossbar.

Then on 17 minutes a long ball upfield by Robinson was pin-point for Santa Cruz as he nodded down for Pedersen, Dunn took control of the ball to charge into the area but Howard smothered his near post shot.

Dunn, the Rovers' vice-captain was starting to dominate the centre of the area, and he got his reward with a superb strike at the midway point of the half. Santa Cruz and Pedersen combined on the edge of the area before Dunn got involved, he took a touch to put the ball on his left before curling a 20-yard effort that gave Howard no chance.

It was a tremendous way for Rovers to open their campaign, and was fully deserved after an impressive first half display.

Rovers continued to dominate proceedings, Morten Gamst Pedersen put a header just wide from an Aaron Mokoena centre, but right on the stroke of half-time the home side drew level.

A dubious free-kick was awarded for handball by referee Andre Marriner when a cross struck Steven Reid. Everton's talisman Mikel Arteta whipped in a wonderful right-footed effort that beat Robinson at his near post. The new Rovers number one will not have been happy to concede a goal of that nature.

After conceding so late in the first half Rovers came out a little shellshocked in the opening period in the second half, Everton forcing the pace early on, a Leighton Baines centre just eluding both Yakubu and Leon Osman just a minute after the restart.

But it didn't take long for Rovers to start to impose their game on Everton once again. A flowing move down the left saw Warnock send a deep cross which was headed over by a rampaging Steven Reid.

Jason Roberts worked tirelessly for the cause up front alongside Santa Cruz, a neat piece of skill from the big striker almost saw him through, quick feet saw him take the ball past Valente and then Lescott, but his route to goal was just blocked as he prepared to pull the trigger. The perfect way to celebrate your birthday.

But Everton started to cause Rovers more and more problems defensively. Phil Jagielka put a header over, whilst Yakubu curled a low strike just wide of the far post.

But the Nigerian didn't have long to get on the scoresheet when on 64 minutes a cross from Mikel Arteta found the former Middlesbrough striker arriving at the back post to leap above Warnock to head Everton into an unlikely lead.

But as unlikely that lead was, it lasted barely 90 seconds. A wonderful cross-field pass from Stephen Warnock was controlled on a sixpence by Roque Santa Cruz and with his second touch he drove the ball under the advancing Howard and into the back of the net.

The game ebbed and flowed in the final fifteen minutes, the ever impressive Roberts saw an effort saved by Howard, Yobo just getting to the rebound ahead of Morten Gamst Pedersen.

However a minute from time it was the Rovers who had their hearts in their mouths when a cross on the right from Jagielka saw Robinson caught in no-mans-land allowing 16-year-old substitute Jose Baxter free at the back post, thankfully for Robinson and Rovers the young debutant put his free header over the bar.

And as with the first half, there was to be some last minute dramatics in the second. A Rovers free-kick was sent over by Warnock into the danger zone, Ryan Nelsen powered a header against the foot of the post, but for once a Rovers man was first to react and that man was the unlikely figure of Andre Ooijer as he lashed the ball high into the roof of the net.

The winner sparked jubilant celebrations both from the vociferous travelling support who were superb throughout and on the touchline where the players mobbed manager Paul Ince.

Tottenham and Manchester City in battle for Roque Santa Cruz

August 16, 2008 12:20 by lmartinez

Spurs manager Juande Ramos is in desperate need of attacking reinforcements, having sold Robbie Keane to Liverpool for £20 million and with Dimitar Berbatov likely to be on his way to Manchester United.

According to reports, Spurs and United have agreed a deal in principle, thought to around £30m, but the sale will only go through once Ramos has secured a replacement for the Bulgarian.

Ramos is known to be a big fan of Cruz, who scored 19 Premier League goals, and 23 in total from 42 matches during his debut campaign last season.

Rovers paid just £3.5m to Bayern Munich for the Paraguayan international, but such has been the 26-year-old's impact that they have recently rejected a £12m offer from City for his services.

At the time, City manager Mark Hughes said: "We made a substantial offer, but we'll just have to wait and see. We're trying to address certain situations in the team.

"We've had Blackburn's response, we appreciate it, but we're in the market for a top striker."

City's current financial restrictions, due to owner Thaksin Shinawatra having almost £800m of his assets frozen by the Thai government, means they are unable to match the league's big spenders, which puts Tottenham in pole position to land Cruz.

Ramos said: "We are aware there are only two weeks to go before the end of the window and that's something we are working on constantly.

"We work without rest to look for players. We are working calmly, trying to work on one or two things."
